The 2018 Edition of the Afterschool Centre for Career Development Digital Summer Academy was held on August 1st – September 3rd2018.Metamorphosed from the ACCD Pre-Tertiary programme which is focused on Career Development programming for Secondary School leavers. The Digital Summer Academy aimed at improving the digital skills of young people in our community and enabling their learning, employment and engagement in the Digital Communications and Technology Industry.
The programme curriculum covered Web Designing & Development, Social Media Management, Graphics Design, Android App Development, Photography, Animation & Video Production, and Google Tools. Other areas covered during the programme include Career Counselling, Mentoring sessions, Psychometric test, Free Software Installation, Leadership and Financial Education, Excursions top companies and tourism hotspots as well as a #DSAHotseat session with leading professionals in Nigeria.
The 2018 Digital Summer Academy participants were taken through theoretical and practical lessons delivered through an interactive facilitation style with the objective of enabling them develop fluency in most digital languages; and build on their collective Summer Academy projects as well as personal Post Summer Academy ideas. The programme also featured a PitchFest session where over 30 participants pitched their project ideas during the Academy’s Graduation ceremony.
Speaking at the Academy’s Graduation, Mrs Aja Enun the Chairperson, Board of Trustees of the Afterschool Centre for Career Development and Head of Branch, Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria- Cross River State) charged participants on the topic Ideas Rule the World. She centred her keynote on the various technological enabled products and services that is influencing the education, financial, social, and communications sector across the world encouraging them to curate ideas and solutions that does not only make profit but delivers impact in the lives of their target customers/users.
The Winners of the 2018 Digital Summer Academy PitchFest included: Emilia Omini Okoi who won the first prize with her upcycling idea – Revamp. An online portal billed to teach people to reuse, recycle, and upcycle their existing wares to wealth. Her first Prize included a HP Laptop and a 6 months incubation and data support. The 2nd Prize winner Francis Benjamin won an HP Laptop, 3 months incubation and data support for its BandAid idea – a content curation platform for life bands and entertainers nationally while the 3rd Prize winner Precious Inyang won a Lenovo IdeaPad laptop,1 month incubation and data support for Readlearn- a targeted learning platform for young people preparing for examinations. The Runner ups for the 4th and 5th prizes went to Smith Nkereuwem of Jalo App – a needs meets offer website for and Keyu Patrick – with her Gerontology service idea for retired civil servants.
The 2018 Community Development project of the Digital Summer Academy class was launched by the participants. The project is a #SaveKwaFalls initiative targeted at restoring one of Nigeria’s Tourism hotspots in Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State. The participants fundraised and purchased solar home kits for the Welcome Lounge of the Kwa Falls where there has been no electricity in the last 8 years. The 2018 Digital Summer Academy was delivered with funding support from World Connect and Media partnership from HITFM 95.9,Calabar.
