Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. John Gaul Lebo and some of his colleagues, Hon. Stephen Ukpukpen, Hon. Hilary Bisong and Hon. Mathew Olory, visited the Secretariat of the Association of Cross River Online Journalists, ACROJ last week.

The Speaker during the visit called for cooperation and partnership between the Assembly and the union with a view to ensuring effective dissemination of information and activities of the Assembly.

He stated that the key purpose of the visit is to recongnise the online media as a strategic partner in the democratic project of the state. He charged online media practitioners in the state to be balance in their reportage and avoid speculations.

In his words, “The first challenge you have is when you don’t have access to information, you may speculate. So what we have done is to grant you free access to the House, you don’t need accreditation to come to the House. I like to see a performance evaluation of members objectively done by the media. I would like to see interviews with members on their constituency development plans. I like to see members being challenged on issues. This is how we can add value to life and democracy”.

Responding, the Chairman of the Association of Cross River Online Journalists, ACROJ, Mr. Iwara Iwara, thanked the Speaker and members of his team for finding time in their busy schedule to visit the secretariat and promised that members of the association are committed to fair and unbiased journalism.

The meeting came to a close with a question and answer session.
