The Cross River State Government has said it will release N50m as grants to each of the five participating bands in this year’s Calabar Carnival. By implication, a total of N250m will be given as grants.

Chairman of the Calabar Carnival Commission, Mr. Gab Onah, disclosed this in Calabar on Tuesday while dispelling speculations that the annual fiesta might not hold this year.

Onah addressed journalists in company with the Special Adviser on Events Management to the Cross River State Governor, Mr. Kenneth Aklah.

Before now, the participating bands, which are BaySide, Passion 4, Seagull, Master Blaster and Freedom, were given up to N30m each to prepare for the event, while N10m was reserved for the overall winner.

He said, “Again, the governor has increased the grants to the bands. Former governor (Liyel) Imoke gave between N20m and N30m. Governor Ayade has increased the band’s grant money to N50m.”
