We have been rightly informed by the Cross River State commissioner of Special Projects and Duties, Victor Adugba Agwu that the famous 12 km long Calabar monorail project which was earlier scheduled for commissioning on 20th December 2015 would finally become a reality before the end of February 2016. The commissioner said the project was stalled due to power issues and other underground difficulties which they have currently been able to clear off.
The monorail project which started in the last administration to connect the administratively neglected Calabar International convention centre , Tinapa and the Margaret Ekpo International airport has attracted a lot of negative comments and has been perceived as a white elephant project to the locals. Although the government has argued that the project is only in its first phase, we however believe that an investment of over $36 million for a 12 km and over $80 million if extended to 25.4 km romp is indeed as perceived.
We sincerely do hope that the project upon completion would add measurable value to the Cross River State tourism drive as intended by connecting these areas and boosting socio-economic developments in the state.
