Members of the Association of Cross River Online Journalists (ACROJ) have been encouraged to continue the good work they are doing, because there is power in online journalism.

The charge was given by Mr. John Upan Odey, a 2019 gubernatorial aspirant from the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Cross River State, when he paid a courtesy visit to the secretariat of the Union in Calabar.

Upan Odey who hinged on the importance of professionalism on the job said that it was very laudable for the members to come together and set standards for themselves.

His words, “It is important to have a professional body that regulates this very important activity of online journalism. These days you rarely see people carrying newspapers about like the days when we were young, these days you see people with their devices and they are reading newsfeed from different platforms, twitter, instagram and interacting at the click of a button.

“There is so much power in online journalism and I recognize this, so whenever I have the opportunity of meeting with the persons who practice this noble profession I am so excited.”

Upan Odey said he is into politics to help Cross River become a better society and stated that, “The traditional politician, they fear us because they see us as people who want to make things different from how they were.

“Our slogan is Cross River leadershift, leadershift because the whole idea of leadership, the whole political concept in Nigeria we have gotten it totally wrong. There is something wrong with our process of leadership selection and the only way we can correct that is through leadershift and we want a total paradigm shift from politics and how we get people elected into office.”

Earlier speaking, the Chairman of the Association, Comrade Hope Obeten welcomed the aspirant to the union’s secretariat and informed him that the group “is a body of online journalists that came together to put together our common strength to change and take charge of the narrative of Cross River State” and that the group has been doing that with success over the years.

He reiterated the union’s commitment to ensuring that its members practice within world best practices.
